Jewelry Glossary
Jewelry - objects such as rings and necklaces, made of precious materials, which people wear as decoration. They are usually made of gold and silver and decorated with pearls or precious stones (rare valuable stone, such as a diamond, a ruby, an emerald etc.)
There are different sorts of jewelry:
1. Some of them people wear on their neck:
- chain - a series of connected metal rings, it can de decorated with;
- charm - a small object worn on a chain or bracelet, that is believed to bring good luck;
- medallion - a piece of jewelry in the shape of a large flat coin worn on a chain around the neck;
- locket - a piece of jewelry in the form of a small case that you wear on a chain around your neck and in which you can put a picture, piece of hair, etc.;
- pendant - a piece of jewelry that you wear around your neck on a chain;
- string of beads - a set or series of beads that are joined together;
- bead - a small piece of glass, wood, etc. with a hole through it, that can be put on a string with others of the same type and worn as jewelry;
- necklace - a piece of jewelry consisting of a chain, string of beads, etc. worn around the neck.
2. Some of them decorate clothes:
- brooch - a piece of jewelry with a pin on the back of it, that can be fastened to your clothes;
- cufflinks - a pair of small decorative objects used for fastening shirt cuffs together.
3. Some of them people wear in the ears:
- stud - a small piece of jewelry with a part that is pushed through a hole in your ear, nose;
- earring - a piece of jewelry that you fasten in or on your ear;
- clip-on earrings - earrings, fastened to ears with a clip;
- hoop earrings - earrings in the shape of a hoop.
4. Some of them they wear on their wrists and fingers:
- bracelet - a piece of jewelry worn around the wrist or arm, it can be decorated with charms;
- bangle - a piece of jewelry in the form of a large ring of gold, silver, etc. worn loosely around the wrist;
- watch - a type of small clock that you wear on your wrist, or (in the past) carried in your pocket;
- ring - a piece of jewelry that you wear on your finger, consisting of a round band of gold, silver, etc., sometimes decorated with precious stones;
- signet ring - a ring with a design cut into it, that you wear on your finger;
- wedding ring - a ring that is given during a marriage ceremony and worn afterwards to show that you are married;
- wedding band - a wedding ring in the form of a plain band, usually of gold.
Some jewels are very famous, such as:
The Cullinan Diamond - the largest diamond ever found, weighing about 620 grams. It was named after Thomas Cullinan, the head of the Transvaal mine in which it was found in 1905. Two years later the Transvaal government bought it for $1000000 and presented it to King Edward VII. It was then cut into nine large stones and 96 small ones and used in the Crown Jewels.
The Kohinoor (also the Kohinoor diamond) - a large diamond given to the British in 1849 by the ruler of the Punjab in India. It is now part of the Crown Jewels (the jewels and other precious objects worn or carried by the British King or Queen on official occasions. They are kept for the public to see in the Tower of London and include several crowns, sceptres and swords. Only two small items are from before 1660, as the original Crown Jewels were destroyed during the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell).
